Garden Design
Harrogate Gardens Designed to Mature Well
Naturalistic planting schemes and landscaping from RHS-trained designers, plus the seasonal maintenance to keep them thriving.
Services
Whether you've got bare soil around a new build or a garden that's never quite worked, here's how we usually help.
Garden Design
from £750
We survey the plot, talk through how you'll actually use it, and draw up a layout that suits the light, soil and slope you've got rather than a generic template. You come away with a plan for the whole space, not just a list of plants to buy.
Planting Schemes
from £350
This is where we spend most of our time: choosing perennials, grasses and shrubs that hold their shape through the seasons and knit together as they grow, instead of sitting as separate clumps. The result is a border with something going on in October, not just a burst of colour in June.
Landscaping
from £2,500
Paths, borders, levels and any hard surfacing get built properly before a single plant goes in, so the garden has a structure worth growing into. It's the groundwork that stops a garden looking unfinished five years down the line.
Seasonal Maintenance
from £45 / visit
We come back through the year to cut back, divide, mulch and edit what we planted, because naturalistic gardens need guiding rather than leaving alone. You get a garden that stays looking cared for, instead of drifting into scrub.

About Us
Designed Here, Grown Here
We're RHS-trained designers, and we set up Fernway Studio because we wanted Harrogate gardens that suited the ground they were planted in. That means choosing plants for what actually thrives here, not what looks good on the day of planting and struggles by the second summer. Most of the work is quiet: picking grasses and perennials that move well together, spacing them so they knit into each other rather than sit apart, thinking about what a border does in November as much as June. People tend to come to us after a garden's been landscaped but never really settled, or when a new build has bare soil and no plan for it. We design the layout, do the planting, and stay on for the seasonal maintenance, because a naturalistic garden needs a steady hand to keep it looking cared for rather than overgrown. The gardens we started years ago are still changing, and that's the point.

Questions
Common Questions
How long does a full design and planting project take? +
A typical Harrogate garden takes a few weeks from first visit to planting, though it depends on the size of the plot and the season. We'll give you a realistic timeline once we've seen the site and talked through what you want, rather than a guess up front.
Do you work with existing gardens or only new builds? +
Both, and most of our work is with gardens that already exist but have never quite settled. We're just as happy reworking tired borders or a landscaped garden that never got a proper planting plan as we are starting from bare soil.
What if I don't want to sign up for ongoing maintenance? +
That's entirely your choice. Some clients want the design and planting and are happy to look after it themselves, and we'll leave you with clear guidance on what needs doing and when so the garden doesn't lose its shape.
How do you choose what to plant? +
We start with what actually thrives in your soil, aspect and the Harrogate climate, then design around that rather than forcing in plants that look striking on the day but struggle the following year. It means a slightly more restrained plant list at first, but a garden that looks better every year instead of declining after the second summer.
Do you take on small gardens, or only larger projects? +
We take on gardens of all sizes, from a compact courtyard to a larger plot with several distinct areas. The principles are the same whatever the scale: right plants, proper spacing, and a plan for how it develops.
